The URGE project – Cultivating Equality: Rural Women, Food Systems and Agroecology in the Iberian Peninsula – investigates the role of women farmers in building more just, sustainable, and democratic food systems. Recognising their fundamental contribution as food producers, guardians of local knowledge and practices, caretakers of the land and key players in processes of social transformation, the project seeks to understand the challenges they face and to value their knowledge, experiences and demands from a gender perspective and using feminist methodologies.

Focusing on Portugal, Galicia and the Basque Country, URGE aims to highlight the diversity of today’s rural realities, challenging stereotypical views of rural women and agriculture. By highlighting the wide range of strategies, practices and forms of collective action developed by women, the project expects to demonstrate their central role in promoting agroecology, food sovereignty and more just rural futures.
